Recovery isn’t just for the person who is addicted, it’s also for the spouses, partners, children, and friends of the addicted person. Al-Anon Family Group’s book Many Voices, One Journey offers insights, stories, and histories of how alcoholism and other addictions can leave family members feeling hurt and alone. But, Al-Anon offers family members a chance to connect with others to learn they are not alone in their experiences with their addicted person.
The book shares, “At these times, we families would gather together, sometimes for a serious meeting, sometimes to play bridge, or just for a chat over a cup of tea. But when we traveled, we visiting wives would always tell the home families we had learned we had to work on the same program as our husbands, for our own growth and serenity.” (pg 14). Support is key for anyone navigating addiction, and a wide circle of fellowship and support can help navigate the challenges.
