Conquering Shame and Codependency
8 Steps to Freeing the True You
by Darlene Lancer

Shame and doubting one’s worth can be debilitating. Unemployment and isolation as a result of the pandemic can fuel these negative feelings. Darlene Lancer’s book offers help for this particularly hard time. Learn how to heal from the destructive hold of shame and codependency by implementing eight steps that will empower the real you and lead to healthier relationships.

Shame is the torment you feel when you’re exposed, humiliated, or rejected; the feeling of not being good enough. It’s a deeply painful and universal emotion, yet is not often identified nor discussed. For some, shame lurks in the unconscious, undermining self-esteem, destroying confidence, and taking a toll on one’s overall health. “The need to be loved and accepted can make us hypersensitive to any sign of disapproval or abandonment. We’re anxious about rejection, abandonment, or making a mistake, and about being successful.” (p. 100)

As a way to cope, people immersed in shame develop codependent relationships–where we overlook our own needs and desires as we try to care for, protect, or please another–often cover up abuse, addiction, or other harmful behaviors.
