The Language of the Heart is a collection of Bill W.’s articles written for Grapevine, AA’s international journal. The articles were written to help “unite the Fellowship’s new groups and hammering out the principles of AA.”
Bill W. wrote, “Our AA experience has taught us that: 1. Each member of Alcoholic Anonymous is but a small part of a great whole. AA must continue to live or most of us will surely die. Hence our common welfare comes first. But individual welfare follow close after.” (pg. 22)
The emphasis on community and fellowship has always been central to AA and the 12-steps. Coming together for regular meetings, one-on-one support with a sponsor, and enjoying community gatherings helps individuals be a part of the whole fellowship and continue working on their individual and collective recovery.
