The Grandfamily Guidebook
By Andrew Adesman, MD & Christine Adamec
September Special Price: $13
How to make things better when everything seems upside down when your grandchild becomes your live-in child? That’s exactly the goal that Andrew Adesman & Christine Adamec had in mind when they developed this truly comprehensive guide to life-changing experience of raising a grandchild or two or more. It will not surprise those who are creating a new kind of “grandfamily” that the main reason children are removed from parental homes involves substance abuse and neglect.
Here are some of the responses that happen when grandparents hear (often inappropriate) comments (pp.60-61):
- They hear: “It must keep you so young, raising a child again!”
They may think: Yes, tell that to my arthritic knees and my aching back.
They could say: “It’s a challenge, but I do my best.” - They hear: “Maybe his parents will straighten out and take over the parenting again.”
They may think: Sure, when pigs fly.
They could say: “We’ve adopted Joey, so we are now his parents.” - They hear: “Does it feel weird to be your age and raising a child again?”
They may think: It feels sad, stressful, and often joyous.
They could say: “It feels like we’re doing the right thing.”
If you, a friend or another family member is in this situation, take some time to be better by reading what the authors call, “Wisdom and support for grandparents raising grandchildren.”
