New beginnings are a mix of exciting and difficult. It can be scary to not know what is coming next, and for families at Stepping Stones, those new beginnings can be full of challenges.
After 44 years of providing services, we know that abuse can lead to a lot of chaos and fear for those involved, but it’s a known fear. The routines and habits of what can lead to a violence outburst are known to the victim.
For example, Sandra has learned that if the dishes aren’t done and the kid’s shoes are laying in the living room when James gets home, he’s going to be mad and take it out on her. Multiply this cycle by years, and Sandra knows how to navigate life to keep herself and her child as safe as possible and try to “keep the peace” each day.
But, when one of James’ violent outburst hurts not only Sandra, but also their child, she decides to leave and find help. This new beginning for Sandra and her child at shelter can be scary because she doesn’t know how to navigate life anymore without trying to manage the abuse. It takes a lot of time, resources, and support for Sandra to have a new beginning without fear and anxiety of what will be the “thing” that will set someone off that day.
