Emily* spent six years with her husband who verbally abused her daily. He would tell her that she wasn’t good enough, she was a terrible mother, and that she didn’t deserve him. He threatened to call child services on her and tell them she was neglecting their son if she didn’t do what he told her. One day, Emily bravely found the courage to speak up and tell a friend what was happening. Her friend shopped at Stepping Stones thrift store and helped Emily call Stepping Stones for help.
Each family that walks through Stepping Stones’ doors has a story. Every story is different, but they all have one thing in common – they decided to speak up and break the silence. Bravely saying “enough is enough” is difficult and scary, but it opens the door to a life free from abuse and victimization. It’s the first step on the path to a healthy future. Within Stepping Stones’ advocacy and shelter services, women, men, and children have the space to take an honest self-inventory and begin to create goals to move forward.
Speaking up and breaking the silence is not just for those who have experienced violence. Speaking up is also our responsibility. The common phrase “If you see something, say something” is a reminder that each of us can take action and support someone who may be experiencing victimization. Join Stepping Stones in choosing to NOT be a bystander by speaking up and helping out when needed. You can make a difference and impact the lives of those around you by being aware and help those in need.
Emily and her son moved into Stepping Stones shelter for two months before moving into her own apartment. She was able to regain confidence in herself and skills as a parent. Emily’s new life free from abuse began because she bravely took the first step to break the silence and ask for help.
